I am buying a new computer with windows 7, my present computer uses XP. I want to transfer all my files to the new computer but from what I have read the transfer program only works with files and will not transfer the programs. How do I get all my programs and data files onto the new system? Thanks for any help

Your not going to transfer your installation if thats what your thinking.
If they are exe to install on yours you will create a workgroup with same name and a computer name on each computer. call it new computer, old computer then network then share the files or directory as needed. Share printers or what ever.

All programs and games will have to be reinstalled unfortunately. Programs and games can't be copied over like personal data can. When you install a program it installs registry entries and possible system32 files that make it work correctly so your only choice here is to reinstall the programs.
USB stick would work, An external hard drive would work as well. I personally had the same problem transfering all data (really copying it) over to my laptop. I used an e-sata cable. You could do this if both devices have e-sata connections.
All these ways require manual transferring (all i did is copy my C/: and paste it in my new computer. Duplicate folder warnings would pop up, and i would just click no) But this way works

I didn't know that you could transfer files from 7 to xp over network? I had a problem of not finding the computer when i tried this. Both computers could not discover each other.

I can transfer from 7 Pro 64 bit to XP ok. I can't access the files from XP from Windows to 7, and yes, i shared the HD. That's another discussion. I tried and tried. I can access all the others fine.

I have burn out trying. sometime ya have to forget and regroup and get ready for the next adventure. Its called figuring it out.
