DBAN and Dignostic for Hard Drive

I want a completely fresh install of XP, and someone told me to use DBAN (Darik's Boot And Nuke) to completely erase everything on my Hard drive. Is it a bad idea?

Before I install XP and after I run DBAN I want to run a utility to test my hard drive. Make sure it's running fine, but I don't know what Diagnostic utility to use. Can anyone recommend one?

It isn't really needed, a format usually works just as well.

For diagnostic software, your hard drive manufacturer should have one you can use.
