DDR SDRAM Question

Hi all, I am new here (been lurking for some time).

I am wanting to upgrade my memory and not sure what I can use or how much. What I have installed now are 2 pc2100 DDR SDRAM 256's. I have four slots to work with. My main question is, do i have to stck with the pc 2100 or can I use the pc3200's / pc2700's? Is there any advantage or disadvantage to this?

You should be fine using PC2700 or 3200 but keep in mind it will downclock to PC2100 speeds if you mix them (or if your board doesn't support faster RAM)

This all depends on which pc and motherboard you have. Check your manufacturer specs to see which RAM is supported, and how much your
board can use, and go from there.
 
Thank you, I may just stick with the PC2100 then. I don't know if this has anything to do with the speed, my processor is listed as 1.8 GHz and 991 mhz. I have a Compaq Presario SR1901wm.
 
Your system supports up to PC3200. I wonder why HP used PC2100. You have a socket 939 Sempron 3200+.

Re: 2100 - vs 3200, I think he's referring to the BUS speed on your MOBO - not your processor speed.

My computer came with a PC2700 - but I have a PC3200 DDR Ram in it. The 2700 is rated at 333 mhz - the PC 3200 is rated at 400 mhz. My MOBO won't let the speed of DATA access from the RAM to my computer any faster than 333 mhz - even thought the RAM I have put in my MOBO is rated at 400 mhz.

Thanks for the help, if my system supports the PC3200's then I will go with them. Sounds like HP may have had some extra PC2100's laying around when they built these. :)
 
Update. I just got two PC3200 1Gig sticks and installed them in my computer, I have not performed anything demanding yet but I can see that everything is happening faster. Thanks for the help.
