DDR2 memory-2 different sizes in MOBO

Hello.

I want to add a 2GB module to my current config (ASUS IPILP-AR aka Locktite-GL8E) with only two slots on the MOBO. Currently there are 2 X 1GB modules.

Question:
Can I use a 1GB and a 2GB module together in my MOBO??? They are both 240-pin, 667MHZ, DDR2, PC25300, Low Density. I am unsure if the timings match (is there a way to check this?)

I have heard that non-matched modules of DDR2 will not run at optimum speeds. I plugged it in and it seems to be fine. Seems quicker and Windows Vista says 3GB of memory available.

Is this set up OK? Would I be better off with 2 exact matching modules instead of different sizes (and maybe different timing sequences)? How can I measure speed / performance to see if I am in an optimum environment??

Thanks!!!!

It will run at the slower settings of the 2 sticks but for the most part that's usually fine. Everyone always says buy the exact same thing but in my experience I've never had any issues when mixing RAM.

2 same size sticks would be better to get interleaved dual channel, but since you were only at 2GB, moving to 3 will help. Slower RAM is still way faster than your hard drive.

Thanks. I actually just opened up the old wallet and bought an exact matching module of 2GB. With 32bit Windows, I will only be able to use about 3.5GB, correct? Well, anyway, I will still sleep better at night knowing I have the proper matching modules, even if I lose half a gig to Windows 32bit ;-)
