DDR2 or DDR3?

Hi,

I have a question about types of memories. Is it better now to get DDR2 or DDR3?
I would logically carry out that DDR3 is more quick but I havent actually seen it before in any gaming computer yet.

I am building my computer so that it handles games like Far Cry 2 with no problem so which memory should I buy?
 
DDR3 is the newer of the two memory types and more future proof.
DDR2's maximum is 800Mhz
Where as DDR3 is 1600Mhz

I have DDR2 and that does the job fine, DDR3 is more expensive and dont forget to get a compatible motherboard whichever you choose! :)

ddr2's maximum is not 800mhz as i have ddr2 1066mhz
 
get DDR2 800 or even better DDR2 1066 but i read somewhere that you cant realy tell the difference when having 1066 over 800 so its realy up to you if you get a deal on the faster set.

Pretty sure they make up to DDR2 1200. And they make alot higher than DDR3 1600.

yeh you might be right-but at the end of the day its down to cost, for me it was spend an extra £20 and and get the 4gig 1066mhz rather than 800mhz..

personally i would get ddr3 with the new i7 processors and just stick to ddr2 with the older cpu's for the time being (ddr2 is cheap and ddr3 is expensive)

You are all wrong. Technically, the fastest standard of DDR2 is DDR2 1066, which has been agreed upon by the JEDEC standard. All memory faster then that is simply overclocked from the manufacturer, and do not follow the same guidelines as the JEDEC standard RAM. DDR3 goes up to DDR3 1600, while anything faster then that again is simply overclocked RAM from the manufacturer.

They can get away with that by over-volting the memory, or using higher tolerance chips.

Your technically right by JEDEC standards. But that goes all the way down the line. Half of DDR 800 is just overclocked 667 and so on. Pretty sure the standard is that, what ever speed its rated at it has to be 1.8V. in DDR2. If its not they have just bumped up the default voltage to make it run at what ever speed they wanted.

They can make more profit selling 800 at 555/15 timing at 2.0V, then they can selling the same memoy at 667 at 555/15 at 1.8V:P
