i have a dell 8400, it has 2 sticks of 256mb DDR2-SdRAM in it running in dual channel mode, would i have to buy the same sort of ram if i wanted to put some into the 2 other slots?

it would have to be at the same clock speed or higher (otherwise you will down clock you current ram which is a waste). And will need to be ddr2 aswell. However it does not need to be the same make or model as the current modules

are you sure? sometimes the motherboards can be picky and want all the timings to be identical since when one is bursting data, the other one has to be synchronized so that isn't
