DDR2 vs DDR3

I know the price is outrageous at the moment, but how much performance do you gain by using DDR3 over DDR2?

Right now benchmarks show no real noticeable improvement. DDR3 is new, and just like DDR2 upon release they have very high timings, and the current speeds aren't anything to write home about. I would honestly wait until DDR3 matures a bit more so the latency to speed ratio improves, and prices come down.

DDR2 that is overclocked and run using tight timings can currently achieve about the same performance as even the fastest DDR3.

That's good to know , for I'm in the process of building a new system just after the first of the year. I was looking at these chipsets X48, X38 or even P35 since there is not going to be anything worth considering from Nvidia.

I just looked at some of the prices of DDR3 and now I think I'll stay with DDR2 since I already have some decent memory.Maybe in a year or so it will be worth the upgrade.
