DDR3 12800 only running at 1066.

So I bought a P6T SE, i7 920, GTX275 and 6gigs of 12800 DDR3 a few days ago.

Anyway, CPU-Z is showing that the RAM is only running at 1066MHz. I went into BIOS, left everything on auto except changed the DRAM or whatever the setting is called from 'Auto' -> 'DDR3 1600MHz' figuring this won't be a problem because its rated to run at that.

After I booted, DWM failed hardcore within a few seconds.... CPU-Z was showing the right freq. on the RAM, but the timings had changed to 9-9-9 instead of the 8-8-8 they were on previously. They are rated to be 8-8-8 and 1600MHz.

So I hit restart to set it back to how it was for the time being and I got a BSOD as it was shutting down...

So what's going on here? How can I get this running stably at 8-8-8 1600MHz? CPU-Z also showed the NB (Northbridge? I thought this MB didn't have one) was running at a pretty rancid high frequency (3000MHz+ I think) when I had the DDR3 1600 setting on. It's currently sitting back at about 2100MHz with everything on auto.

As a side note, the system is running beautifully so far. I'm running Windows 7. Just want to figure out these tweaks to have it running that little bit better, as it should be.

Thanks for the help.

You need to set the Voltage manually too. There should be a default Voltage to what Speed and Timing you have it set at. What Memory is it?

Kingston HyperX 6gig PC3-12800 CL8.

Is that enough info? What should I set the voltage to? It's not supposed to be above 1.65 or something for this CPU right?

Hey guys, thanks so far.

That newegg link is the stuff I have.

And with the voltage.... my BIOS has the following options regarding DRAM:

QPI/DRAM Core
DRAM Bus
DATA ref of CHA
CTRL ref of CHA
DATA ref of CHB
CTRL ref of CHB
DATA ref of CHC
CTRL ref of CHC

Which ones do I need to change? I'm guessing the QPI/DRAM one to 1.65V right?

Just want to be sure.

Cheers.

Okay so I put the DRAM Bus to 1.64V. Couldn't get it to 1.65, it would only go to 1.66 and then it warned me that would probably kill my CPU.

Booted up and its stable this time. Although that NB Frequency in CPU-Z is 3200MHz. Oh and it says there is only 5.1G of RAM now.... My Computer properties says there is 6G total but only 4.99 usable. What's going on now?

Oh and one more thing, the timings are 9-9-9 again. Do I just manually set them back to 8-8-8?

I dont really understand what your doing. Are you raising your CPU or Memory Voltage? If I was you I would reset your bios, I have no idea what all you have changed. Then just manually set your MEMORY voltage to 1.65 and your MEMORY timing to 8-8-8-24 and speed to 1600.

if you want to run the ram at the recommended settings, you can use the X.M.P profile in your bios its heaps easier. Itll set all the voltages and that for you.

Thanks. I tried that it worked. All the right speeds, timings and amounts. It seems to be making the whole system run slightly hotter, but I guess that's okay.

You increased your CPU voltage, that's why your system is hotter. You need to lower your CPU to default and increase MEMORY voltage. Keep your overclock settings to unlinked, if your motherboard has an option for that.
