I was going to build an i7 computer, and I always hear this is the best ram and so I was feeling good about getting it, but now I took another look at the motherboard I want (Gigabyte x58 extreme)
http://www.gigabyte.us/Products/Mot...rd&ProductID=2960&ProductName=GA-EX58-EXTREME

and for the ram it says "Supports 3 channel DDR3 2100+ memory by 6 DIMMs "...and the RAM I was looking at is only 1600....so that got me kinda worried...should I try to get 2100 ram?

..I cant find any 6gb 2100/2000 kits so for 6gb I would have to get 2x3gb kits which would drive up the cost a little and also leave no room for further expansion-except if I was to completely redo the ram(buy a new kit)...

To hit 4 ghz you do not need anymore than 1600mhz ram. 2100 would be over kill unless you bought a 965 and wanted 4.5ghz+. I have hit 4.5ghz myself with my 1600 ram. With a 920 run a 20 multiplier with a 200 qpi and the ram will run at 1604mhz. That will overclock you to 4.0ghz.

that sounds nice, is it stable?...what kind of cooling are you using?..would it damage the cpu at all going so high?...what about long term effects?...and one last question -would you recommend the Corsair dominator ram?...(would you have gotten it instead of the patriot ram in your sig?)....

I had the choice but I went with the Patriot because it's a very good company and it was cheaper. They have the same specs and they work awesome. I have had the ram running at 1920mhz with no errors. The Corsair ram is great and many people have gotten great OC's with it.

For hitting 4.0ghz I only use 1.47volts so it's not too harsh on it. I may be limiting it's lifespan but I will have sold it long before it dies anyways (like 12 years down the road). The cooler I have is the ThermalRight IFX-14. The Coolermaster V8 is just basically a clone of it (thermalrights cooler was out before coolermasters). Either choice you make they it will be a great cooler if you choose to OC to near 4.0ghz.
