Help me diagnose my problem:

yesterday my pc just froze in windows, completely locked up. I cut the power and rebooted and i don't even get a bios post or anything, black screen and nothing happens. So i reset the CMOS jumper and it fixed the problem temporarily, and the date went back to 2002...I thought i was golden but now this same lockup/no bios post routine happens every hour or so. Any ideas?

Thanks

having a dead battery would definitly send date back to original date. doesnt hurt to try new battery. u can by these almost anywhere. meards, homedepot.
try pulling battery out and then try runnig system if it doesnt post at all, and then it does when u put battery back in then it probably is the battery.
remeber your board should have been giving you a short beep every so often telling u low battery. what other info can u supply.

Doesn't sound like a typical battery problem, I've seen CMOS battery problems a few times and usually you get a message about cmos checksum failure prompting you to press F1 to resume. Then again Press F1 to resume has been known to come up in different circumstances such as when no keyboard is dtected:D

It sounds like either a dead battery. Get a new battery, only costs a couple quid/dollars.

Look here for more info on another p[ost with someone with suspected dead battery+how to replace if you don't know.

It could also be, and this one i doubt for now, a motherboard on the way out. Keep with possitives at the minute and try new battery and then go from there if it doesn't sort it out.

I don't think the CMOS battery will crash a computer.

Sounds to me like maybe your PSU is going out.

But yes, the battery is just a few dollars.

I am doubtful it is the PSU because it started again after jumper reset. If the PSU had gone pop or was going out it would either not work at all or would crash under strain because it would stop giving clean power.

Bootup isn't that strenuous really other than for the processor, but even so a modern processor uses very very little power so the strain it must take isn't shown in the PSU really.

I had the freezing problem when I installed new graphics card on my mobo.
I had to flash the BIOS after which everything got sorted.
If you have recently installed any peripherals then consider flashing the BIOS ;)
altho such behaviour can and usually does occur straight after the installation.

I don't think the battery is the issue, you said the date didn't go back to 2002 until you reset the CMOS right?

I think something else is the problem, PSU problems can show up with odd errors like that, memory errors are another possibilitiy.

Download and run the program "Memtest86." This is a program that tests your RAM. Let it run for a few hours to see if it finds any errors.

Do this just to rule out any possibility of it being memory fault, but it doesn't seem like symptoms of a memory issue to be honest.

Try doing as has been said about flashing the bios. If the bios went back to 2002 then i am guessing it was around then that you bought it, if you haven't updated since then you will be miles behind so that could be the issue

Im with bodaggit on it not being the battery. If it was your battery all your setup information/clock would have been lost before you reset the CMOS. Have you ever turned on the computer recently and had to readjust the clock?

My friend had a bad PSU. His computer use to lock up in the middle of using it, or the screen work just turn black and you would have to reset. After a while it completely stopped, it wouldnt boot up anything. You turned it on and it just sat at the black screen.

Does your computer still boot up? im kind of lost at your last sentence but it sounds like it still boots and you have a problem every few hours... Correct me if im wrong here, like i said, that sentence lost me ( 8am and i havnt been to sleep yet haha )
