Dead Drive+Grub=No Windows

I have two HDDs in my rig, one, an old WD that tended to overheat, has Ubuntu on it, and the newer one has Windows XP. Somehow, I am pretty sure the old drive (they are both SATA) has completely and utterly died. When i have both drives plugged in, it gives me a "Operating System Not Found". When i leave the good one plugged in but take out the bad one, i get "GRUB error 21". When i do the opposite, i get the "Operating System Not Found" message. I have tried using the Recovery Console with the XP disk, but no good. How do I get rid of the remnants of GRUB?

I would use the XP disk to get into the Recovery Console Dos command mode and type 'FIXMBR'. or did you try this?
