Dead HP Laptop

Within the last year, I purchased an HP Pavilion laptop(don't remember which model right now, I'll look at it when I get home) from Costco. About a few months ago, it completely died. It won't do anything. I suspected my AC adapter, but I tried another AC adapter with no luck. Of course, it's still in warranty for a few more months, but during a move, I must have lost my proof of purchase. So, I'm pretty much up a creek. I've had people tell me that it might be the motherboard. I don't understand how this happened. It was always connected to a surge arrestor, it's never been dropped, or had anything spilled on it. I've never even traveled with it. I kept my McAfee up-to-date. One thing I have suspected as the problem is where the AC cord plug-in. It seems pretty loose, like something inside may come unsoldered.

I'm just not sure on what to do next. Since I can't find my proof of purchase, odds are the repair cost will be out of my pocket. If it's any more than $500, I'll just forget about the laptop and get a new desktop system. What might be the problem? How much will it cost? Where should I get it fixed?

Thanks!

No, call HP. They probably won't even need the receipt. I would call them as soon as possible and explain your situation.

Well, called HP, they said my warranty expired 2 days ago:mad: So, I guess I'm up tha creek. Looks like I've got a $1500 paperweight on my hands!

If it's the motherboard, or perhaps a broken power cable connector, how much might the repair set me back?

I would call them back and SERIOUSLY bitch them out. I mean, tear them a new one!!!!! That's bullshit. Any company worth more than a two pence and a cigarette would look after a customer in that situation. Oh man, that's BAD customer service. I mean.. TWO DAYS?!?! It's not like it's a month or anything. I wouldn't take that.

Anyways, if you have to repair a motherboard, count on $500. If it's the power jack, at least $100 to lift the board out and resolder.

Yeah, I thought that was pretty weak, too. I thought about calling them back and raising hell about it, but it probably won't do any good. $500 sounds about right if it's the motherboard. If that's the case, I'll just buy a desktop. I should have done that in the first place. But, if it is the power cable jack, I won't mind spending $100-$200 to get that fixed. I know of a good little computer repair shop, so I'll have them look at it.

If your fairly knowledgable with electronics and you have a soldering iron, you may want to think about trying to solder the AC Adapter port back on yourself.

Well, took it to that little computer shop, they'll know what's wrong with it in a few days or so. I'm sort of put-out with HP now, too. It seems like they just make cheap crap these days. Of course, I'm just a casual PC user, anyways. A high-dollar machine would be a waste of money for me. I thought about seeing if I could solder the port back on myself(if that's what it is), but I just decided to let the pros handle it.

I'll let y'all know what happens.
