Dead Motherboard?

A friends computer got shocked by lightning through the ethernet line is what they told me-now power switch wont work and system doesn't display anything -but when plugged in case fan and processor fan are both running-hard drive is still workable--slaved it to my system to check it. Would it be best to try and find the same motherboard and processor and just replace them?- It is a HP pavilion with a AMD 9150 phenom and an Ecs mcp61pm-hm motherboard. Also tested psu-that tested ok.

Sounds like its only a bad motherboard. Just find the same motherboard if possible and just swap parts and boot up like normal.

Frankly, I find the majority of lightning-strike computers to be total losses-- it seems like you only have to replace one or two components now, but then two or three months down the road another part fails, and another a few months after that... sure you get a little more use out of the stuff, but at what cost?

How much is your time worth? How much data will you lose when hard drive goes south or is corrupted because a catastrophic failure occurs during a write sequence?

You will have to start with the motherboard. But your entire system could be potentially fried.

Best of luck.

I had the same problem some years ago.

Your best bet is to backup all the data on your hard drive if you can then replace everything because, as I found out, sooner or later the rest give up as well.
