Decrap windows (not a rant)

Hi all,

I have a dell laptop that is around 5 years old now and is inevitably slowing down.

Beign the youngest member of the family i can blame my older syblings for losing (or scrathing) or in some way preventing the use of the re-install cd for windows.

So i would other wise back everything up, format the HDD and re-install but that option is out of the window.

So I decided to clear all of the documents of the HDD (onto CD) and remove unused or unneeded programs. (using the add/remove) and then defrag.

I was just wondering if there is anyway i can speed up my computer more?
Also, how do you choose which programs start up at the begining as well? (I could disable Belkin wireless utilitys for example).

Personally I go to Start>Run>(then type)msconfig

It brings up a window that lists all of your start-up programs, just de-select which ones you don't want to run. Also, if you're so inclined, de-select which services you dont want to run as well.

Thier are programs out there that give you a better explination of the programs that are currently running on your PC that is listed in the option I just described but I can't remeber what they are called, maybe someone else will and let you know. Hope this helps, it might make more scense once you do it.

There's a great program called Cleanup! that will delete your temp files. This has cleared over a gb of space in 1 run for me! Here are the settings you should use:
Install it and click 'Options' - make sure the following Detailed Settings are checked:
Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch Files
Cleanup! all users

Click OK then click CleanUp!

I'd suggest running it in Demonstration mode to see how it works and how much space you free up.

I would also run through the add/remove programs list, remove anything you don't need, then take a glance in your Program Files directory and see if there's anything you don't need there.

Let me know how much space you free up, kinda curious...
