Defragmenting, Need article on it.

or some type of webpage explaining it, some kid i know keeps claiming its just compresses the files to save HD space...so i tryed explainging the sectors andveerything , and he was just like no, it compreses it to save HD space and make it faster!

Even if it DID do that it wouldn;t make it faster, more like slower...
 
defraging tries to put the files in order. ie. file.big is spread across numerous sectors that aren't in order so the hard drive has to move all over to read the entire thing, defragging makes it so it spans a set of consequitive sectors

Native Command Queing would reduce the need for Defragmenting somewhat, wouldn't it??
 
i thought ncq just controls the order in which the drive carries out its commands. i don't c how this would change the need for defragmentation.

Agreed.
I "think" what I meant to say was. NCQ "might" reduce (somewhat) the effects of fragmentation. :confused:
