Delete Viruses in safe mode??

When I run myt anti-virus software, it picks up stuff but never can clean it due to it being access denied. A friend of mine recently suggested deleting some viruses my anti-virus program picks up by running the computer in safe mode and deleting them. Will this work?? any negative effects??

That will have only the basics running when in safe mode. There you can run a few different antivirus/antispyware tools to see which one will clean the system. If a virus or trojan is too deeply imbedded you have to perform a repair install of Windows to see the system running normal again and try a few different tools then.
