Dell 2400 ram upgrade

memory

My dad has a Dell 2400 pentium 4 pc with 1gb of ram installed. He has been having trouble with the pc being slow lately. I checked the ram with memtest and it returned errors most likely due to different kinds of ram installed.

I am looking to upgrade the ram for cheap until we can get the new build going for him. I put together an i5 760 build, we just have to get some things sorted out first, that's another story.

Well according to the manual, the max supported memory is 2gb. But the max per slot it 512mb, there is two slots. So which is the max it can support? How can it have 2gb if each slot only supports 512mb's?

Wow, after looking at some ram on newegg, it is not going to be as cheap as I thought it would be.

It looks like the chipset supports up to 2GB of RAM, though at the time, Dell could only verify 512MB modules and so that's the limit they put in the manuals.

I see a few people out there using 1GB PC2700 modules in their Dell 2400s.
