A friend of mine has a Dell 600m and for some reason it will no longer run on a/c or charge the battery. Does she need a new mobo or just a new part to solder on? Thanks for any help.

Same token about getting a new battery... I also can sell them for you if you live in Southern Ca. Because I have a vendor close to me that sells me batteries for all types of notebooks.

Good Luck!

Has her battery charger sh*t the bed? Check to make sure the light on the charger is green. Mine died before the warranty ran out so i got a new one. Also, yes, try pulling the battery and checking the terminals, one may be dirty. Then insert the battery and charger and see if that does the trick. if not then she may be looking at a new battery.

Actually she did get a new battery and that turned out to not be the problem. That one is now dead because it can't be charged.

She tried using another person's 600m charger and that didn't work either.

Yes the light turns green on the comp when she plugs it in but it doesn't recognize it in the task bar at all.

Thanks for all the replies! Does anyone else have any suggestions?

The port where you plug the charger in may be dead or damaged. Plug the new battery and old battery into the other persons computer and charge them on there and then use them on her laptop i guess for now.

That was my next step actually. Is there a way to replace that part by chance?

Hey, i own four dells and aside from reinstalling everything when i first get a dell the hardware is all right. Im always tight on money and the only reason i buy dell is because theyre cheap and i would love to build another comp but buying the OS is what kills the price. But yeah umm, if you want to take a look at it pop up the cover that has the power key on it, remove the screws from the keyboard and then pull that out, but make sure you pop up the harness retainer(where the keyboard plugs in) so as to not rip the harness off, and then go from there. Remove screws in the back of the laptop, take the battery out, there may be a screw where the wireless card and monitor plug in also. Then you can get to where the charger plugs in to take a look at it. You can find diagrams on the dell website as to how to go about this. Im sure you could figure it out yourself its a no brainer, i have my laptops apart once in a while to clean and stuff lol.

Awesome advice! Thank you so much. I will go and see if I can't find a diagram or two and pop the hood so to speak. Thanks for your help!

no prob, if you see something that may have popped out of place or may need soldering, try and pop it back into place and if that doesnt work you could try and solder it yourself if you know how to or have the tools to do that.

I hate to dig up an old thread but I have an issue too. My battery shows a green light...I can run my computer off the AC adapter...but when I unplug it the battery light flashes red and dies soon if I don't plug it up fast enough...any help? I also have an Inspiron 600M (not by choice, it was my graduation gift from my mom who gets a dell discount).

I agree that it is the power contact point on the motherboard. I fix a lot of them because the solder points are so weak the can break easily. The actual repair is no problem, the biggest deal is to dismantle the laptop to the point so you can GET TO the power connector on the motherboard. But it is very possible.

If your cord charges a friends laptop, and a friend's charger your battery, then I would definitely say it was the power connector.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

so, is it where the AC adapter plugs in or the battery?

Assuming you are asking about the power connector, it is on the mb. Inside the belly of the beast if you will.

Just be careful when you open the thing up, inadvertently ripping out wires would not be a good thing. I have heard that some people tore some ribbon cables, that's another can of worms because now you have to look for parts.

Good luck, keep us posted.

^ The good thing about 600m's is that they are relatively easy to find your way around once inside, compared to other models out there. The keyboard is rather tough for it's fragile look, but be careful of the touch-pad connector when you pull off the upper bezel.
