I'm getting no "boot device detected press f1 to boot from disk" on my friends Dell. This only happens first time you boot the system after that it works great. I'm thinking it the batt on the mobo.

My thought would be a failing harddrive or possibly motherboard. If it was the battery, it should constantly give you that error untill you setup the bios. Though most of those probably automatically set the HD specs...

failing battery errors are normally checksum errors could be a loose cable or not set in bios to boot from hdd that contains windows if its a sata hdd make sure all the sata drivers are up to date

Thanks for all the help. But why would it only do it on the first boot of the day? If it was the HD I thought the error will come up every time I boot.

There's no telling with a harddrive, really... It's true, it should be every time, or most every time you boot...

That machine should have SMART abilties. Be sure it's enabled in the BIOS if it has an option, and/or use something like SpeedFan to check on it.
