Dell Dimension 5100 with Intel 945G Chipet -> Max CPU?

Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for.

I have a P4 HT 3.2GHz 1MB CPU in the system at the moment. I think the max CPU I can put in it is (Intel E6850 Core2 Duo 3.0GHz 775 1333MHz 4MB). Would you guys think it's worth replacing? And is that the fastest the board will take? Thanks.

Well, I'm firmly in the 'if it's fine for your everyday use, why upgrade' camp. That being said, with a C2D, you will see a drastic increase in performance over a HT'd P4. Hell, a Pentium D-series would out-perform it, too.

Before you go and get a new CPU, do you want a new one because you *need* a new one, or because you just want your system to be faster. Either is perfectly fine, but don't think you absolutely need to upgrade in order to keep your system maintained for web-surfing and email use. Also, if you plan on getting a new system (or build your own) sometime in the next year or so, honestly getting just a new CPU now might be a waste of money and limit your options down the road.

All true

Well, I was going to buy a new Dell Precision, (I actually want a new SCSI hard drive in this system), but, Dell messed up the order so it was canceled and then I decided to just try and upgrade this one on the cheap. Like you said, I am only really using it for MS Office, Web and eMail. PC games are a distant memory.

I've put 4GB of RAM in it now, and a new video card a few months back, so I was going to replace the CPU and get a few more years out of the old dog. It's 2 1/2 years old now.

I just might see if I can get a CPU on eBay......Any advice on SCSI hard drives, I looked into this Dell I have and tried to put in an IBM SCSI U160 HDD that I have, but, the power connectors are different. Is this Dell specific?

Hi,

I bought a Core 2 Duo 3.0GHz CPU (E6850), but it would not work. Any suggestions? There were some sites saying it should work with the 945G chipset, but I am not having any luck.
