Dell Inspiron 1501 Upgrade Help...

Hi, I'm not very technical, but recently I found out how to get detailed info on my computer specs (Start > Run > type in "DxDiag"), and that reassured me that they weren't the greatest. (Only 1.8ghz processor, ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Graphics Card etc.)

I signed up to Computer Forum for the very reason of getting some help upgrading my Dell Inspiron 1501 craptop (:D) (By the way, sorry if there's already a thread/section about this sort of stuff, I haven't looked very thoroughly)

So, I would like some info on how I can upgrade my laptop (like what motherboards/processors etc are actually compatible with the Inspiron 1501 etc), and then what specific parts I can buy, please (I thought I might try getting a new motherboard for the sockets that I need to install a better processor - for under £100 (oh I'm British) I can get a new motherboard and a 3.0ghz processor :). This probably doesn't work though...).

I don't really want to spend too much, around £150 tops. By the way, I'm doing this mainly for gaming. The recently released Runes of Magic requires 2.0ghz processor minimum (It really looks awesome. If you like MMORPGs, or have ever wanted to play WoW, then get this. Basically a free WoW with better graphics and features ;). Sorry for that little bit of advertising :S)

Thanks, sorry that was so long.

You really can't upgrade a laptop except for the memory and HDD. Your better off saving your money and actually getting one custom built for you. A laptop isn't like a desktop where you can upgrade it easily. I have the same laptop but I have an amd X2 2.0 ghz processor 2gb of memory. I'm not a gamer so its good for my needs.

Ok thanks...so basically get a new processor? Which did you get, because I'm not sure which are compatible with mine...and do you know if there's anywhere I can look to find out what's compatible or not? Thanks :) (Wow that was a quick reply ;))

No, I didn't say get a new processor. I said get a new laptop custom built for you for what you plan on doing with it. If you plan on gaming you would need a decent processor, at least 2-3 gb of memory and high end integrated video card.

Oh yeah, sorry. I just saw you had upgraded the same laptop I had with a 2.0ghz processor which would be quite good enough for me (probably... maybe slightly more powerful). But yeah, I'll probably have to get a new one built. I'll stick with this for a while longer though. Thanks :)
