Dell Inspiron 1521 wont boot

I've got a dell inspiron 1521 that wont boot. I'm looking for some suggestions as to what the problem might be. When I turn it on, plugged into the wall, the power and battery icons light up. I can hear the fan running and I've swapped hard drives and found the hard drive to be working. Nothing shows up on the screen, it remains totally black. Ive hooked it up to my desktop monitor and pressed FN F8 to swap screens but I get the same result a black screen. I know this could be a number of problems but I would like to try myself before I took it into a shop. It's also running vista.

Does anything show at all? Do you get the BIOS screen? Try repeatedly hitting DEL as you turn the thing on and see if you can get into the BIOS. If you can't, we'll go from there.
