Dell Inspiron 5000e Bad Battery / Hard drive

I have posted previously about my Dell Inspiron 5000e. It will power up as long as it is plugged into the wall. The two batteries I have will not sustain the power of the laptop for any amount of time. As someone previously suggested I cleaned and inspected the battery terminals on the battery and computer. They looked clean and fine.

I am going to buy a new battery. I suppose they are around $40 on ebay.

I also want to upgrade to a larger hard drive. But the computer is at my girlfriend's house. Are hard drives easily installed in a laptop? I have a lot of experience building desk tops. Any tips, references, or advice will help. thanks!
