Dell Inspiron E1705 won't turn on

Hello all -

We have a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop. Recently it has stopped turning on at intermittent times. When we hit the power button, we get the green light for about 2-3 seconds, and then it just clicks off. Middle of this week, it started turning on again, and now it is back to the same problem. Any ideas? Please let me know if you need more info. TIA!
 
Does it turn on with the battery removed? If so, then the battery has a short in it.

Should that not change anything, it might be defective RAM.

No luck when I tried starting it with the battery out and the power cord attached. How can I tell if the RAM is defective? I think the RAM was recently replaced or upgraded or something. We had a computer person look at it about 2 months ago (and it ran fine until about a week ago), but I'm not exactly sure what was done to the machine.

Only way to know is to swap it out with a known good RAM chip.
