Dell memory

I have a dell desktop that runs on vista.
Could I add the memory sticks from my older dell that ran on xp without mucking things up?

It depends on the model numbers, not the operating systems.

Well I think they are probably different models as one is much older than the other.

How about you find the model number off each laptop, it will be on the bottom somewhere (some have the pertinent data hidden under the battery) and do a web search for each model number to see what kind of memory it uses?
