dell os cd won't install on new pc, mirror image possible?

It seems I can't install my XP from my dell reinstallation cd to my first build. I don't want to spend more money. I noticed that I am only allowed to have this OS installed on one computer due to the EULA. I am happy to give up my out dated laptop in favor of my new computer. Can I do a mirror image of the hard drive to an external hard drive, and then to my SATA internal drive of my new computer? Is this legal? Is there another way to do this or get around the installation cd problem? My laptop is about 7 years old, a plasma crack, missing key, and several other issues. Didn't I acquire a license to XP with my previous purchase?

well it is i think illegal. but it would not work anyway. Since you config is different in each computer, you would just get bsod every bootup

Well, its in my signature. Its a barebones system. I got the 8800GT video card, a 550 watt corsair PSU, 2GB of Kingston ram, and a monitor. I was hoping not to spend anymore on it, at least not on an OS. I just set up the dvd drive and hard drive tonight.

why can't you install XP? Are you getting any errors? You could try calling Dell and ask if you could buy a XP cd replacement at a lower cost.

you could try the Linux on your laptop. its free.

He can't install XP because it's from his Dell. The Dell reinstall CD checks to make sure your on a Dell computer (most likely checks the motherboard/BIOS), so it won't work on another PC.

Well when they say XP is included with the back then new computer it is misleading. It makes me a little mad that I have the disc but can't use it. If I was getting a limited license they should have told me. I guess thats what I get for not reading the contract.

no that is standard, XP is included but the license is tied to that machine forever. You may not transfer a license of XP from one computer to another. If you own a retail box copy or OEM, you are legally allowed to install it on one computer per a license. The software included with a purchased PC is bound to that PC. That is why it comes bundled and it is included in the price. Otherwise you would buy a new PC, then have to spend money on the OS you wanted if they did not bundle them that way.
