I have a question for anyone who would know, i am planning to buy a computer for my family that will mostly be used for normal computing and gaming. I have decided on the Dell Studio XPS, with the i7 processers.

now im wondering if i can, when the computer comes, take out the video card that is in their, and exchange it for another one, probably one of these two.....

The reason im wondering, is because the video cards require the space of two physical slots. Does anybody know if i could do this.

and on a side note, if i could also change the power supply if i needed too?

Thanks in advance.

What card did you get with the pc? The 4850 is a decent card,
although the GTX280 would smoke it.

If it will run a 4850 it should run a GTX280 I would think. I don't
see specs for the power supply.

PS, don't waste your money on the i7 940. The 920 is plenty,
and you can overclock it past the 940.

I decided to just get the 3450, as it is the cheepest, and then put my own in. Dell's prices for their video cards are pretty inflated compared to what you can get them for at other places.

Thanks for the info!

** The link from Tiger Direct for the 9800GTX+ has the price at $200. On Newegg the price is $160 for the Superclocked edition and a free game....something to consider**

There are 2 Dell Studio XPS computers that you can buy.

1. Dell Studio XPS

2. Dell Studio XPS 435

There will be an issue with buying your own graphics cards for these computers. The normal Studio XPS has a 360w power supply and the Studio XPS 435 has a 475w power supply.

The GTX 280 is out of the question unless you buy a new power supply...no questions asked. The 9800GTX needs a minimum of a 450w power supply with 24 amps on the 12v rail. The 9800GTX might work, and it might not work when you install it. This will be pushing your power supply to the limits. You may experience some system instability while running the 9800GTX at full load.

If you are looking at the Studio XPS 435...you can get an ATI 4850 for an extra $100...that is a great card and many people run it here on the forum. Also with the XPS 435...you can get an ATI 4870 for an extra $200...that is a game smashing card, you will be very pleased with it and it's performance.

So, in the end, the graphics card upgrade through Dell really are not that bad priced.

ATI 4850 is about $150 on Newegg
ATI 4870 is about right at $200-$260 on Newegg.

My suggestion is to spend the $200 on the ATI 4870 upgrade through Dell. It will have a warranty from Dell for the complete system. You won't mess around with power supply issues and trying to add a new card and worry about stability issues.

Thanks for the tips guys,

I kinda figured from the start i would have to put in a better and bigger power supply.
