Hi everyone. I have a 3 year old Dell Dimension 4550. I was just wondering what I should upgrade in order to get better performance. I use it mainly for music and video encoding. My budget is about 300 USD.

This is what I know (think I know) about my computer

intel pentium 4 northwood 2.66 GHz
BIOS version A03
512 mb of DDR-SDRAM 133 MHZ (with one slot open)
NVIDIA GeForce MX 420 with 64mb DDR memory

Thanks you for any input

for the budget u have dont get a new cpu and mobo i wuld get a gig of ram and a new gpu. if u spend 300 on a mobo and cpu u will be wanting an upgrade in a few months.

It probably doesnt have an AGP slot, so you wont be able to get much of a better GPU... Check, if you do, get a new grafix card

not only does he have a low budget but he isnt gaming with his comp. he is listening to music and video encoding. he doesnt need a high end gpu.

plus, if he gets a new mobo he will need a new case, it's a dell

very important, the new mobo and dell case wont like eachother.

He doesn't need a GPU. I don't really know about Dells but a faster drive would help with video. And like I said a CPU and RAM will help alot. your CPU is not orrible though.
