Dell XP Home install disk

I'm building a new computer to replace the Dell on typing on right now. The operating system install disk reads, "for distribution with a new Dell pc only." Will it not work if I try to install on the new computer? Will I get in trouble for doing so? I also have the 2002 version of XP Pro Upgrade. Could I do a brand new install using that disk?

its probably OEM so it will only work this the dell. Also depends on what is on the disk. It could be a restore/repair disk or full install.

That Dell install cd you have will only work on another dell system(dell motherboard/dell bios) You may possibly use the upgrade cd, however, you would need an older OS install cd such as ME, 98SE, 98. If you don't have one of those then you are out of luck and will have to buy another XP install cd. I recommend getting the OEM version here.

Just touching on this to fully explain how the XP Upgrade CD's work (since it comes up every now and again)...

A very common misconception is that you can *only* use an XP Upgrade CD if you have Windows currently installed on your system, where in fact, all you need is a valid copy in your posession.

If you have an XP Upgrade disc, it actually has the full version of XP on it, it's just coded to only install that version if you can verify you have a previous, legit version of XP, installed or not. A previous, legit version is defined as one that was obtained legally (ie, not DLed, burned, etc.), regardless of OEM or Retail (FWIW, a Recovery CD is viewed as OEM).

If you do a straight Upgrade (Windows installed, pop in the CD and Upgrade), everything is fairly straight-forward. If you do a New Installation (blank HDD), just boot to the Upgrade CD via BIOS and let it load. Follow the on-screen instructions and eventually you'll be prompted to verify that you do in fact have a previous version of Windows.

Take that however you want to...

That is good news as it allows me to spend that money on better components. As I mentioned it's a 2002 version which was the year it came out. No service packs and totally vulnerable. Can I install it and download the service packs and security patches safely without getting my computer hacked into a million tiny pieces?

If you have a burner in your system, then most likely you have some sort of software installed such as Nero or Roxio. Those programs will burn ISO's to disk.

Theres a program called burn to dvd (it might be burn to dvd) but google it, and that burns ISOs

I tried to do it myself and got lost. I downloaded AutoStreamer and AutoPatcher. Streamer wanted a service pack file. Patcher just looked at my hard drive and not the XP Pro cd in the drive. Need help.

Follow instructions here on how to sliptsream SP2 into a new install cd

Then Follow the instructions here on how to use your program to burn the iso image to disk.

I followed the simplyguides procedure. Everything goes well until AutoStreamer starts to copy XP to the temporary folder. It says that the process takes about 25 minutes, but it get stuck at 10% every time I try. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

More than just a little disappointed to get enough help to get me into trouble, but not enough to get me out.
