desktop & laptop

okay so I am new at learning computers. the back story is my work had 2 computers collecting dust in the back room. I asked to have them to save money and build/learn alittle more about computers.

so I took them apart and starting playing with everything. I know have 1 computer with xp on it. the other was vista.

my gf had a laptop that got some tea spilt on it. I was able to pull the hard drive, memory & processor out. also I was able to get the hard drive to work on my desktop so we could get all the files off it.

what I would like (because I am cheap) is to use her laptop hard drive with windows 7.

is there anyway I can use her laptop hard drive with windows 7 and use it on my desktop that has xp.

the reason for this is I want this to be a gaming pc in the future. nothing super crazy. right now I am playing farming simulator 2015 on her new laptop.

being a nice bf I don't want to keep playing my game on her laptop that was not fully design to play games for hours.

any tips or links would be great. I could not find what I was looking for. maybe it was my wording. thanks guys and gals.

You'd probably be better off just budgeting a new system for gaming. Upgrading an XP-era PC to play games generally results in buying parts again anyway when it doesn't perform to your expectations.

Being a SATA drive it's pretty much just plug and play similar to any other drive. You might want to get a 2.5"->3.5" so you can securely mount the drive in the PC, but there shouldn't be an issue just installing Win7 on it.

thanks beers.

her hard drive does have wins 7 on it. but how to I get win7 from that laptop hard to the desktop hard drive?

would cloning it work?

my plan for the computer is to upgrade the motherboard first, then a new HDD, I don't need a lot of hard drive space just speed. still can decide on a processor yet. there is so many. then 8gb of ram. then a 1b vid card.

The only thing you can use her hard drive for is storage space, you can't boot to it because it was used for a different computer and when booted it would detect new hardware and would need to be reactivated and you won't be able to reactivate that license on different computer.

As beers as said, you would need a new system in order to game.

You'd probably have to buy a motherboard, CPU and RAM at the same time. Newer standards for those components aren't backwards compatible. For CPU there are really only a couple depending on the platform you want, but you need to match it with the motherboard. All motherboards don't support all CPUs. Once you throw in a video card and an upgraded power supply on top of that you pretty much just have a new gaming PC already.

Personally I would just do a fresh install of 7 on the desktop. Transplanting Windows installations between different platforms generally doesn't end well.

I know the motherboard and ram is pretty cheap but it is the CPU that is my biggest expense since I am not sure that one to get for the best performance out of as little as money as possible.

What kind of games other than farming simulator do you play?

Might be able to concoct a suggestion depending on the titles. Some games are a LOT better on different platforms than others.
