New here and really not the smartest in the computer world, so I will need alot of help which I'm hoping you guys/girls can give me..

Now this laptop will not be used for gaming at all, so thats one thing I don't have to worry to much about..the main use of it will be for college really, so basicaully, typing essays/reports and things in that nature, AIM, email, music, enternet use (alot) i.e forums and just searching online.

Now I would like this laptop to last me a decent amount of time which is asking alot I know because laptops don't have the time life like a desktop..

Budget wise I'm looking at anything up to $1500..

There is though some brand names I stay away from; Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Gateway..
The main ones I was thinking was POSSIBLY Dell...and then for sure either HP or Mac..

Now I don't know what specs I really looking for I was thinking of a 4GB for memory, 15.4" screen, atleast 250gb hard drive? Thats all I was thinking of but then again like I said I'm not to smart in this..

So please help!

Newegg.com has great laptop deals all the time.

There are a lot of great Asus laptops, but this is a good Sony.

you'll have to upgrade the ram.

The website doesn't have Dell's or mac's, so the only HP in your price range and size was not a good option. This is a Lenovo Thinkpad. Again, a lot of good Asus laptops.

edit: Here is a good HP for $999. This is the best option I have found so far.

I really never heard of anything good of Asus thats why I stay away plus I don't like how they look..

What specs you think I should look for with the needs I'm going want with this laptop? ( HD, memory, grapgic card, etc )

Also whats the deal with Vista is it good or no? I'm always up to try new things but I hear so many different views on it..

Boo to you Sampson! Asus make GREAT laptops :P. I've had one for over a year now and am VERY happy with its performance/price ratio. They are actually some of the top of the line notebooks out there. However, with that said, I think some models do look goofy.

never heard of anything good by Asus???? do you live under a rock? 99% of their products are excellent.

anyway i would go with Asus or HP for a laptop maybe even a gateway

Spec wise, here are my suggestions for $1500

*160gb+ hard drive
* atLEAST 2gb's of ram
* Intel 2ghz + core 2 duo
* Any dedicated graphics card (not x3100, GMA ect.)

You have Dell and Asus backwards! Asus has a great reputation both for price, quality, LONGEVITY, and tech support (2 years global 1 year accidental coverage both come standard). They are my MOST reccomended brand. I've had nothing but bad luck with Dell laptops.

Here's a few you could look at. It doesn't sound like you need that full $1500 dollar budget you have posted so I'm not gonna give you anything that expensive. You should be fine with much cheaper.

Here's a great laptop, will do everything you want it to and then some for years! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220308

Toshiba Laptop another good choice but for the price slightly less powerful than the Asus. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114473

Here's an HP since you seem to be leaning towards the brand. I will say this is a great choice. It comes with a blueray drive which is awesome. Not quite as powerful but plenty for what you need. Definitely worth a look.

Dell really isn't that bad. The most recent issues are paint coming off the finish, and low quality lcd's. The lcd is kind of a big problem, but dell fixes those.

I suppose, I might have just had bad luck, but personally at least I will not be buying another Dell. Their price/performance ratio isn't as good as it used to be anyway. HP and Asus, seem to be better now in this aspect (yes even with the famous Dell coupons).

Dell's price/performance ratio is one of the best. Especially with their coupons.

These work too. You can get a blu-ray drive, or similar, for free with the coupons. Well, you could, but the current coupons only are good for inspirons, which don't have blu-ray capability.

Asus, is a better company, and HP is similar.

That's because, currently dell does not have coupons for the xps systems. If they did, you would be getting 4gb ram, 320gb hard drive, 1650 res lcd, blu-ray, 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo for around $1700.

I'm getting a gateway p-6860fx and putting a 2.8 C2Extreme in it. keep in mind 4g ram 300+hardrive w/ a spare HD bay, user swappable CPU, and an 8800 series graphics card. You just can't touch that. Even when Dell has their XPS coupons available they are still beatable.

Saying that gateway can beat dell sometimes in terms of performance/price is ok. Saying that dell is not as good a company as gateway, is completely wrong. Dell can be "beatable", but upgrading the cpu yourself is too hard for the average consumer.

This is incorrect. Gateway designed this computer to keep the CPU easily upgradable, just as easy as upgrading your RAM. I can't attest to gateways quality personally but people I know with them have had much less problems in a longer span than I have with Dell.

Oops sorry I did mean to put as I want to stay away from Dell cause all I had with them is complete horrible luck..

So Asus is really good? I never really here much about them at all so I'll have to look into those laptops as well..

For a hp I was looking at the dv6700t model, it is rank top 2 in consumer reports in the 15.4 workhorse category (macpro beat it)

Dells customer support is freaking abysmal so good luck with that if you get a Dell... I agree with everyone else about Asus, Ive got one of their notebooks and its fantastic for the price!

Yea thats why I'm staying away from Dell, like I said right before you that I made the mistake saying I was considering Dell, I had computers and laptops of there (sisters) and it was like they sent us sh|t right outta the box and did nothing about it!

So so far I am looking at HP, Mac, and possibly Asus now I have to get more feedback and learn more about them...So people please give me as much info about them

Also if there are any other laptops people recommend please show like I said budget is $1500 maybe a little higher but don't really think it'll go that high since I'm not gaming really..

Also I asked for specs cause my gpops is the one who is buying me this and for some reason he wants me to tell him what specs I'm looking for..odd I know lol

asus is excellent i couldent be happier with my laptop... unless maby it was free lol its great!
hp is good too.. but asus got that nice accidental 1 yr, saved my friend when his roomie spilted a pop on his comp

sampson chances are at 1500 u wont be able to get a very powerfull mac, there a more exspensive brand... think of a lexus vs like a mustag for mac vs other laptops, both have same power but lexus cost more..

For your price you can get a very nice system. I would suggest not skimping much just because you'll get more years out of it that way. So for specs:
Processor: 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo or better
Hard Drive: 200gb or greater 5400rpm or more.
RAM: 4GB
Video Card: 512mb DDR3 Dedicated or 1024mb DDR2 dedicated (ex. ATI Radeon HD 3650)
Screen Size: I wouldn't go bigger than 15.4 Wide screen because of portability.

Now a system with the above specs would probably game fairly well (depending on which video card you get). However eventually its gaming capabilities will fade and you'll be glad you got that extra OOMPH in it.

Here's a couple laptops to look at:
Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220307R
Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220308
Asus: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220279
All of the above come with a 2 year parts and Labor Warranty and 1 Year Accidental Damage Coverage.

My friend has the m50SA-x1 very nice looking and very snappy. Also it has login by face recognition which is kind of cool.
