A friend give me his old computer it's a Hp Pavilion 6830 with windows xp but the hp is too slow it takes 20 minutes just to start up it takes me 5 min just to start internet explorer so i was wondering if i add a external hard drive would it help speed up?

Please post your system specs probably a lack of memory adding an external hdd will not do anything for speed might even slow you down some...

Based off what I found on the net, that computer is just plain and simply too old... older than mine...

Seems like CPU is Intel celeron 700mhz, with 64mb ram, 20gb HDD(that's not too bad for me :p)

You could always upgrade the RAM, but there's 1 thing that will remain, its a slow and outdated computer... Its not even a case of upgrade if it costs more than 30$, just go for a new build if you have the funds and needs. if its just to surf the web once a week for an hour, I guess it works.

Go into Start>>Control Panel>>Add/Remove. Now just start removing old programs that you don't use. That should speed it up some. Then Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Disk Defragmentor. Then defragment the hard drive. This will probably take awhile, but you will make a noticable difference.

EDIT: O and get some more ram :P
