Desktop vs Laptop

Today I was quite shocked to see my 2 year old desktop pc outperform my brand new laptop in a game (nfs shift 2). My laptop is a core i5-480m, 4gb ddr3, ati 5470m, 5400rpm drive. My desktop is a core 2 duo e7400, 4gb ddr2, 8800gts 640 oc edition, 7200rpm drive. The laptop stuttered in the game while the desktop dealt with it smoothly.

5470 is your issue here, huge bottleneck to the i-5. You could have the worlds best CPU, still wouldn't help you much.

The key here is the graphics card. You laptop has a great processor and plenty of RAM, but the graphics card is a low end model. While your desktop's card is older, it was top of the line at the time and still outperforms your laptop's newer card.

the biggest problem of laptops are graphic card because most of them have integrated graphic card so you can't upgrade them, now ram and CPU you can upgrade to higher once as long as it supports it (except of apple) and they keep graphic card low end also due to heat it produces and most of them have same heatsink for CPU and graphic card so it gets really hot really quick also.

Unfortunately it's true. I've taken apart quite a few laptops now (as they were overheating and needed the thermal paste replaced and the dust cleaned out of the fan) it's really just a means of cost-cutting for mass-producing. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt them too much financially to have one for each chip.

Thanks for all your replies. My laptop was store bought and many store laptops use intel graphics which would have performed worse so I don't really feel bad anymore. With a few tweaks, I was able to get smoother gameplay.
