now it does not power on at all....tried different power cords and no luck,,the green button in the back is still on,,so there is power i believe,,

I am wondering why, if you left the PC on over night, did you have to even push the power button to "wake" it back up the next day? Usually if the computer is asleep you can just move the mouse or push a button on the keyboard.

Your issue sounds like your power supply has possibly gone out. Were there any weird smells or noises when it stopped working?

maybe your power button went bad. open up the case and replace the usual power switch with the reset switch. then use the reset switch to turn on the pc

^ I'm pretty sure most OEM computers don't have reset switches...but if yours has one then by all means try that.

This is most likely an issue with either the motherboard or a power supply, though.

When PC is in sleep mode then you should just press any key of the keyboard or just move the mouse. It automatically wake up. But as you told your problem then it is the matter of the power button just replace it.

Do you have any fan function when pressing the button? Do you hear the HD spin at all?

To diagnose i'd first:
Check lights (hp's only have lights on PSU - 1 green LED on back and Ethernet Plug)

If those come on when plugged in (ethernet might be yellow but thats ok) check power button physically (does it spring back ok, and make a small click?) if that seems fine open the case and check where the yellow/black twisted pair of wires from the power button are plugged into the board - make sure that the connection is firm.

Then i'd unplulg power, disconnect main PSU power from the board, and put it into a PSU tester (about $5-$10, or have a computer tech do it, he'll charge you though) and make sure your function is good there.

If all these things checked out, its likely the board has a short or is burnt somewhere - you can replace that for about $50 and use the same CPU/RAM (assuming they're ok)

If your hard drive spins when you push the button, i'd say its probably bad RAM.

One more thing - check the voltage switch, make sure it's properly set for your house's voltage (its a small red 2 position switch on the PSU)
