Desperate call for help!

I’ve just had a call from a friend, asking me to try to help him through this forum.

He says that he suspected his desktop PC of having a virus. Thinking it was memory-related he reset his RAM but this has only made things worse.

Now the PC won’t boot up, and all he can get out of it one long beeping tone.

Can anyone help or advise him what else to try, please!

That beep I believe is a POST code, does your friend know what BIOS is on his PC? If he does you can look up what the beep means and it should tell you what wrong with it

Try reseating the RAM again and whatnot. He may have damaged his RAM when he took it out. Also, what would a virus have to do with RAM? hopefully he took it out while his computer was all the way off and he didnt touch the chips at all with his hands.

It seems he had Norton AntiVirus installed but didn’t renew it when it ran out.

Consequently, he’s been fighting a virus for a couple of week, affecting the speed of the PC and stopping him from doing any paste & copy work.

Someone else told him it might be corrected by re-setting the RAM.

He’s familiar with the BIOS but with the machine completely zonked he can’t get at it.

It stopped working completely when he re-set the RAM, and he says he used some tissues to man-handle it.

He assures me the PC was closed down beforehand.

Take the ram out, and all the cables from the rear of the PC, and take the CMOS battery out and all internal cables and hold the power button down for 30 secs, and plug all back in and including memory.

We are confused as to which cables you mean. If he takes out the power cable and then presses the power button, what will that do?

it will reset the BIOS to stock defaults, so anything he put that the cmopiuter cant handle will be resetting back. and when he says take out the cables in the back: power one, monitor, kybrd, mouse, LAN, ect.

Thanks for that.

I'm in Hampshire and he's in Heaton Chapel, Stockport and I'm relaying the info to him over the phone.

He's now tried all the suggestions and no joy. He's given up and is planning to take it in to his local shop.

Thanks for everyone's help - much appreciated.

(I suspect the long beeping tone is computer language for 'stupid boy')
