DFI mobo question

It took me the longest time to try to get my new computer to recognize the CD drive so I could install XP OS. I originally had the CD drive (on master) on the secondary IDE and the HDD (on master) on the Primary and that didnt work. Then I tried the CD (slave) and HDD (master) on the primary cable and finally the mobo recognized the drives. By the way, my case doesn't physically allow this with the standard IDE cable so I had to have the HDD and CD outside the case to get it to work.

Do I always have to have them on the same cable? I would think that I could have them setup as I originally did. I'm going to have to get a longer cable unless you all can help me figure it out what to do.

Thanks

Your jumpers on the CD drive are probably set to slave. Check the manufacturer's website to find the correct jumper settings.

I said they were set to slave when I had them on the same cable and on master when on separate cables. The CD manuf. says to have them on separate cables with both set to master but, like I said, this does not work. They have to be on the same cable for either to work.

That's quite strange. I've inserted many different hard disk/cd drives into that motherboard (I have the same one as you do) and I haven't had any problems, except for when I installed Darwin 8.1 onto a secondary HDD.

How old is the motherboard (since you bought it)? Perhaps a BIOS update is needed, although I'm not totally sure.

I've had it about 2 weeks now so not very old at all. Yeah it's really strange. I just bought a longer IDE cable so I can connect both the HDD and CD on one cable and that should work but its annoying.

Thanks
