DFS Targets

So currently, i'm studying Networking. The class i'm in right now is a Server 2008R2 class. Basically, we're learning how to run servers, implement certain roles, etc. Today I'm doing a lesson on DFS, and implementing DFS. The book keeps referring to setting "Targets." Can someone explain that in better detail please? Thanks a ton.

I don't run distributed file systems but I am pretty sure targets are a set of priorities that are read from AD credentials. Targets are simply a stage of priorities...I think.

I haven't worked with Windows servers in a long time.
