OK my aunt is having trouble with her internet connection. she has aol dial up. Well when her laptop was brand new, it was connecting at 44000 bps. now that her computer is a little older, its connecting at 28800 bps. My question is that is it the laptop thats making the connection slow or is it the phone line?

It might be that AOL is been slowing her connection on purpose. A while back, when i was on AOL, it always connected and opened pages at very slow speeds. OR it either it kept dropping out. After that i changed to a different ISP and then the internet worked fine.
What's your aunt computer specs? (HDD space, RAM etc.)?

2.8ghz processor
512mb of ram
60gb hard drive.

but the connection was really good when her computer was brand new. now it's just sticking at slower speeds and won't go back up. I have slight feeling its her computer but don't know.

Do the following to check the modem settings to see if the modem is connecting at the maximum speed possible. (I assume that your aunt is running WinXP).
Start > Control Panel > Modems > Select your modem from the list and click Properties.
Have a look at your "maximum speed" is really set to the maximum possible.

However, check your aunt's available HDD space to ensure that its not the computer that is slowing the connection.

I took a look at it and it set as its max. Also she's got plenty of HD space left. she's not even at a quarter full yet. so my opinion is that it's either AOL or the phone line.

Like i said before, it may be possible that the ISP is slowing the connection speed down on purpose. If i were you i would contact AOL a.s.a.p stating what the problem is.

ok thanx. she said something about switching ISPs and thinking about getting Wi-Fi. so ya. but she said she'll call AOL and complain. AOL's customer service sucks. They annoying you like crazy.
