Dial Up

I've heard of programs that you download that optimize your dial up and make it noticably faster. Do They Work?
Thanks

there have been a number of threads here about that, they should make a sticky for it..

anyway, all the do is compress the text and images in a web page, and that will make them load faster, but will make the pictures look worse because of lower quality. And on the highest setting, it just doesnt load the audio or videos in a web page. They dont actually affect downloading or in games, just browsing the web. I would say they sorta work, but i would only get it if you DO NOT need to pay anything extra for it, its not worth it.

An example would be Netzero high speed dial-up. In other words, don't get it. lol

I dont like Dial up make me crazy there always very slow. I really love DSL. I always find cheap. I have hear cheap on BellSouth that's ture?

I've never had an accelerator that did any good to speak of. I still have dial up but I will be moving to dsl really soon as there is an introductory offer for 15 bucks a month with SBC so I'm gonna go for it.

but not everyone has acess to DSL.

I don't really think theres any way of increasing ones current speed when using Dial up. If you want faster then convert to broadband, cable is good :)

dialup speed enhancers just compress the data/pictures that are sent over the phone lines. When you go to a website, the ISP would compress the data for that webpage and send over the phone lines, then the program they make you download/use would uncompress it to a certain extent. That's the general theory anyway. I tried it a few years ago, it sucks... :(

It would though, wouldn't it. Dial up is pretty slow and having to wait for this program to go through all those actions before one could view the page (every time) would be an absolute bore fest

Not Good

dial-up sucks, i have 56k and it takes forever to download mp3 or something that is larger than 1MB, i can go for adsl but it's too expensive for now, it's $20 for a month with limited 512MB, if you go over you pay more, that sucks, but the only good thing is that the installation costs only $0,15

You should download firefox and then try this

1.Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining network.http.proxy.pipelining network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

after i tried that firefox went way faster.

I not sure that would work. I think those adjustments would allow the computer to accept data at a faster rate but I doesn't really mean that the user will get faster download speed. I may be wrong of course

it won't increase the actual download speed, but it will decrease the quality of the pictures etc. so that you download less data
