I am in the process of building my first computer. I took apart my current one to for learning. I unhooked the fan, but didnt touch the heatsink. When reassembled, the monitor displayed the bios settings for a few seconds, then said the cpu fan was not working and shut down. It was spinning, and was on decent, but not great because the screws were stripped. I retried, but this time i taped the fan on, failed again. Its socket A for an AMD Athlon 2.04 Ghz. How would i know if the processor got fried. Also could the problem be due to an immense amount of dust in the heat sink.

have a look where your CPU fan is plugged in an read around the plug on the board an see what is says it should be in CPU fan but if it is plugged into SYS fan or something different to CPU fan change it to CPU fan

Either the CPU fan port went out on the board or the fan itself is going out. You said it was spinning but if its spinning to slow the boards fan controller cant detect the slow RPMs and will report no fan. Need to clean out the heatsink and install a new fan or better yet get a new heatsink/fan combo.

your right
