Did I fry my CPU?

so had new cpu cooler sittin around that i bought and never used, well decided to put it on today. got out the old arctic silver, put a bb sized damn on there and put the cpu in. got everything wired back up board back in and i turn on the pc and i smell this weird smell kinda plasticky. so i instantly turn it off. i recheck al my wires, everything is correct. turn it on again, held the cpu fan and case fans still for a second and saw a tiny stream of smoke, like TINY. i instantly turned it off again in fear that i fried the cpu. well i came back a few hours later and pulled the cooler off. looks like i put to much arctic silver and it was makin contact with the metal clip that holds in the cpu (775 socket). would this make my cpu fry?

ontop of all thism my comp wont boot or do anything. i tried clearing the cmos and nothing. not a thing comes up on the screen just black. whats the deal? is it time for a new mobo combo:)
 
If the Artic Silver 5 dropped on motherboard circuits then most likley it shorted out, I don't think anything happened to the CPU.
 
well it didnt looked like it got on any circuits, just in one place the edge of the AS was touching the metal frame that holds the cpu down. the AS did not touch the sliicone part of the board or any circuits... makes me wonder what the smoke was.

so are you sayin the motherboard is shot? not the cpu?
 
You can be 100% sure by putting another CPU in there.

Tell me, are the fans spinning (ones that are connected to the mobo)?
 
well

yes all fans are spinning, including both front, both rear, cpu and side fan. all running like normal. red light is on like it should be on the board. all power connectors are in properly. hmmmm

Then it has got to be the CPU. But can we be sure? :confused:

Did you clean the CPU "Before" putting on the new paste? Was there a sticker on the back of the new cpu fan? Did you take taht off? The burning might have been that or the old paste. Paste hardens, etc. You need to clean the old stuff off with qtips and ethanol. Although I prefer a steady hand, ethanol, and a razor, lol.

well ill post up the exact procedures i followed. came home and pulled my mobo out(because the new fan has a backer plate on the back). so i pulled off the stock HSF and with the plastic scraping tool supplied by AS with my 2 part adhesive i scraped offthe old paste. i did not use the two part stuff for this application i used the normal arctic silver 5. well then i used goop off on q tips to get all the residue off. i then put a dab of AS on the back of the new HSF and rubbed it all over then wiped it all off with a lint free lens cleaning pad. i then put a bb sized dab on the cpu and stuck the new HSF in place. put the board back in, wired everything up and thayts when the weird smell and smoke. it definatly smelled like soemthing shorted out. so i guess my cpu is toast. well looks like ill be getting a new 3000+ venice to OC:D
 
make sure you follow the instructions very carefully, and read the whole thing:

#1 not too much compound,
#2 nothing BUT the compound between the heatsink + cpu (meaning no dead skin cells, no touching it with your fingers... put your hand in a plastic bag... also no air bubble, rub with your finger in a plastic bag in circles to fill in gaps)

if it was a pentium 4, then it shouldn't have fried. most pentium 4's are safe at very high temps, meaning its got a sort of "temperature security"

the only way to tell for sure if it fried is to test. try another cpu, and if it still doesn't work, try puttin the cpu in another system.

well here is my delima. if im going to try a new cpu in this mobo then i need to buy a new cpu. if im buyin a new cpu i would like to buy a new mobo to go with it and run amd 939 instead of intel 775. the rig i have no is a crappy combo, processor is ok but mobo is a ECS POS. so i would rather not buy a new cpu just to test this piece of crap out. what should i do?
 
the CPU can be tested along with your Mem. Call CompUSA if you are in the states and see if the one near you has a testing kit. That will clear up the CPU. If you have to buy one or the other, I would simply go for a new platform. Just me speaking though.
 
well a new platform is in the works either way, i was just going to wait a few months to get some bills paid off before i jumped into a new rig. dont want to cut corners with the new rig so im gonna need about $600 to do what i want to do with it.
 
Yea, CompUSA is a total ripoff. Only actual Computer Store left though

I think I would actually run them out of buisness here if I were to open a shop next to them...
 
well we got a few stores here that are pretty good na d are 100% computers that includes EPO, microcach, compusa, fry(not 100% comp but the computer section is the size of some stores) and a few other small named places that i dont go to
 
i say its 90% the motherboard. if its the cpu, then i'll be surprised. i dont know how intel did it, but pentium 4's don't really fry that easily.

It's not hard. Pentium 4's have a built in thermal throttling mechanism, which clocks down the processor drastically if they are overheating.

Very true. That reminds me of a video where they removed the heatsinks from several CPU's, and Intel's just started slowing down, where as the AMD's just started overheating and smoking.
