Did I fry something? :(

I have an old computer (Pentium II celeron 600 mhz) with a single 64MB stick of ram. I took it out to install a 256MB that I had running in another computer. When I installed the 256 chip, the comp wouldn't boot. So I put the 64MB back in and the comp still wouldn't boot. I would get a black screen like the moniter wouldn't register it was plugged in. So I turned it off to remove the stick of ram and it was sizzling hot. When I tried to turn the computer back on it wouldn't. What has happened????? Please help me! This isn't my comp! :( :(

ah, yes of course, one of those ;) it's either a celeron or a PII

Your Motherboard may not be able to support 256MB of Ram, my old compaq can only support 128
 
Still that shouldn't fry anything. My guess is that the CPU might be gone, if you got no BIOS beep codes then the board might be the culprit.

Naturally you mean inclusive-or ... which is what 'or' by definition implies ... which means it is indeed a Pentium II Celeron.

Compared to the original memory, did the new memory feature the same number of chips (as well as being double-sided or single-sided)

Are you saying there is such thing as a PII Celeron? I've never see anything like that and i don't see how it could work like that.
 
For your CPU, either it's a Celeron or a P III. P II won't go up to 600 MHZ (they stop at 400). For your memory, didyou insert it CORECTLY and closing the two pins that will make it hold?
 
It is a celeron, and I realized that I hadn't put the ram in properly. I couldn't get to the slot very easily, I would have had to dismantle the case and pull the mobo tray out, so I just tried to squeeze my hand and try my best to clip in in there...Long story short the ram was in backwards. The system boots up properly now and I was lucky enough to turn the system off before it fried the ram.

Ram..........backwards..........I didn't think that was possible without causing serious damage to the board.
 
u cant put ram in backward, even the old SDRAM couldnt be put in backward. you must have destroyed the DIMM slot if u managed to.

Not just the slot but the ram as well, you would have crushed the connectors.
 
lol ya theres liek 100 pisn on 1 side and 84 on teh other or something lo and if its still working its a miracle if u clipped the ram in when u were installin it
