Differences between 2nd and 3rd generation cpu

Hi,
I am still confused about the performances of each generation and also the speed of CPU. So how can you tell which processor is faster than the other, is it the clocked speed, the overclocked or the ghz? And what advantages can you gain from the 3rd generation processor and that the 2nd generation is lack off. what are the factors you need to look for when you want to upgrade your processor.
Cheers

The structure is newer and the 3rd generation is just generally faster, but the 2nd generation is not that bad...

Both have the same architecture, there a small 5% to 10% rise in performance in the performance. The 3rd Gen has a better integrated GPU and better battery life. In an Intel CPU just see the number of cores to judge the performance, then you see clock speed, then if confused see benchmarks.

Actually they did some small revisions to the architecture but they are about the same, small performance increase, less power usage, better graphics built in, and slightly better overclocking in the later batches once they do some slight tweaking.

new gen has 3d transistors and more instructions per watt, its better at stock clocks than overclocked generally as of right now, though later steppings may improve this.

You didnt ask about any particular CPU or which architecture. But in general going to generation II or III are pretty big changes but within the same architecture. You will have smaller changes with the same generation called steppings
