different hdd interface question.

I just purchased a new computer, and it came with a maxtor 100gb sata 150 interface. I wanted to put my old WD eide in the new computer. I installed the old HDD and put the jumper to slave. I also went into the bios and made sure my Maxtor was the first to boot. Now when I start my computer, it shows that it is there, and it both works well. If I leave my computer alone for a while, the WD HDD will disappear. I believe this happens after my computer goes on stand-by. I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem, or if hooking up to HDD with different interfaces could be the problem.
I am running win xp with sp2.
compaq presario sr 1710.
amd 3400 semp.
 
I had a problem with my DVD drive (set to slave) disapearing..it could be made visible again by scanning for hardware changes in device manager. This may solve your problem as well.

Is there a master drive on the IDE channel with the WD drive?
 
Set the WD drive to master then and configure it in the BIOS as such. Just make sure your primary master (the SATA drive) is selected 1st to boot.
