Differentiating between Cable or DSL?

Hi, I'm trying to figure out whether my location is running on a cable or DSL connection. It is in a business complex and I find it fairly fast. In front of me is a small box called a Thomson SpeedTouch 516 v6 and it has active green LEDs caled "Ethernet", "DSL", and "Internet". How can I find out what company is the internet service provider here in this complex? Is it possible to find this out on my own by looking somewhere in Control Panel or something? We don't pay the internet access here, it comes with the rent, so I'm trying to find out myself since no bill to us means no information on what things are running on ...

Thanks

Go into command prompt. Run ipconfig. When the information comes up read the line that says Connection-specific DNS suffix. This should give u the address of your provider.

Command Prompt? Hmm, I have Windows XP and that's sounding like DOS you're talking bout which I haven't used since 1998. Could you tell me how to get to Command Prompt in Windows XP? I can't find it in Control Panel ...

Just go to System Information-Tools-Net Diagnostic Tool. And just hit Scan your System and it will tell you what you need to know.

Completely false. So are you saying that a 2Mbps Cable connection is faster then a 6Mbps DSL connection?

It's my understanding that cable is more susceptible to slow speeds due to network traffic than DSL. The problem in my area is that the telco only offers low speeds.
