dim laptop screen

Hi all

This is a Compaq R3240US I have had since 9/2004. It was working just fine this morning. I went to get on it and thought it was sleeping. I kept pressing the directional buttons trying to wake it up but nothing. Then I held down the power button to restart it and it breifly blinked the Compaq symbol for less than 1 second. Eventually I figured out that the screen was on just very dim. I can hold a flashlight on it and see good enough to use it.

I tried updating it but it is fully updated. The power options seem fine. Maybe it is the backlight suddenly going out. Any thoughts?
 
If the lappy is plugged in & brightness turned all the way up and still nothing, the backlight is almost certainly out. Now, I don't know how to fix it...
 
Yes, it is plugged in all the time. I have read some about the backlight and the inverter. The backlight seems to be around $10 and the inverter around $100. I don't know how to change either one but I will try if I can just be sure which one it is. Thanks for the help.
 
Wow, I really dodged a bullet. It was just the little switch stuck when the screen is closed. After jiggling the switch up and down a dozen times or so, the screen began to flicker then it started working.
