DirectX 9.0 L is simply a renamed and refurbished DirectX 10 for Windows XP. It will make DirectX 10 games to work on Windows XP.
And games such as the upcoming Crysis won't work on the existing DirectX 9.0 c. they need a DirectX 9.0 L
One of the biggest issues is the fact that Nvidia or ATI won't have any mainstream or entry-level cards until at least mid- to end of Q1 2007. This suggests that if Vista tips up around the beginning of the year, gamers will be turned off by it.
Electronic Arts, the publisher of Crysis, wants to sell hundreds or thousands, even millions of copies and we doubt that Nvidia can produce and sell that many Geforce 8800 GTX and GTS cards.
It will be interesting to see whether the Windows XP Crysis will be different from the Vista ones

I dont think thats true, since I've heard from reputable sources that DX10 will only be for Vista, and that it's virtually impossible to implelent DX10 on XP because of the way its coded.

I'm not saying that DX9.0L is a lie, since it seems like its not, but I don't think it will be identical to DX10.

EDIT: This is what they said about DX9.0L in a previous article
It's still too early to shift to Shader Model 4.0 as Nvidia and ATI won't have Shader model 4.0 hardware until middle of 2006.

Funny... it's around the 3Q/4Q of 2006 and still no SM4 :P

Wasn't DX9.0L supposed to be the DX9 version for Vista?

From the information I was seeing on it there will be two not versions of DX in Vista. The DX 9.0 L is the backward capable Vista version of DX 9C. That will be the part of Wista geared for running older games. With no one being able to run their favorite picks of the latest games out Vista would go over like a lead balloon. Both ATI and NVidia are having fun with this since their mid to high end cards won't be ready until Vista has been out for awhile.

so... what are you saying?

so, soon to be computer games wont run on xp? dx10 can't be installed on xp? how come my card that i just got yesterday says vista ready if dx10 is required?

DX10 can not be installed on XP, only Vista. It says Vista ready because it has DX9, which is required to be a "vista ready" card. Basically, any card that has DX9 is Vista ready.

You won't too many games rushed out that won't be able to run on an XP system. The newer games would see DX 9 as a minimum requirement in order to run them. Most of the current games are seen as 2000/XP. Now you will start to see XP/Vista as the operating systems a game will run on. Eventually like every other version of Windows it will be Vista or newer.

Yep, the announcement came out, and then was refuted the same day.

It is impossible to implement DX10 on DX9. You can half-way emulate it, but you CANNOT reproduce it. It is hardware. DX 10 will not be backwards. Wish it was, but then what would be the point in upgrading to Vista sooner?

As mentioned before DX 9.0L is for previosly released games to run on a Vista not XP system. There won't be a DX update for XP. You know someone at MS has a big smile on the face with that. "You will buy our new stuff too! :D ". oh yaaa...
