DirectX10 error, 0FPS and so on..

I bought Call of Juarez today thinking I'd come home, pop it in and play it on my PC.. but I get low frames (0-1FPS).. audio is fine, but the part I don't understand is why I get a DirectX10 error.. the game tells me it failed to start the rendering device when I go to play it in DirectX10 mode.. according to my computer, I have DirectX10 installed :confused:

Sorry if I sound like an idiot.. I've never gotten much into gaming on a PC, and this confuses me.

I use my onboard graphics (nVidia 6100 nForce405).

either way the game will not be playable without a upgrade.

Then what does this all mean?

My computer meets all of those requirements
 
It means your OS has dx10. None of that matters if your video card doesn't support it.


Only the geforce 8 series and ATI 2k series support dx10 at the moment.
 
I'm a casual gamer, and use either of my 360 or PS3 majority of the time.. so I guess I'm looking for a card that meets the min. that won't give me extremely low FPS, and supports DirectX10.

Will this work?
 
Performance-wise? A whole lot. That 8400 is a very weak card, while the 8600gts is very competent playing Dx9. Dx10 is another ball-game altogether, And whether or not it can play a Dx10 game at any level of playabilty is up in the air.

TBH many people consider the Geforce 8 series to be "mock" DX10 cards. By the time Dx10 is actually released these cards could be cannon fodder. :\ Unlikely with the Gtx and Ultra but still.
 
I'm okay with not using DX10, there's other options to play the games without it.. at least in the main menu of Call of Juarez there is.

I can't see myself spending $150+ on a video card to use it for a few games a year.

I thought the same thing before I bought a crappy card.... Now look at what I am jumping for...
 
INTEL, what other advantages would the 8800GTS provide? If there are added benefits, I could be pushed to buy one.. just need a few good excuses :D

I am the same way, lol. Well, right now, DX10 is new, it has bugs, things that need to be made more efficient, yeah the list goes on. To take advantage of the DX10 games when most come out later, you will probably want one of these cards. Since Microsoft is taking their time fixing DX10, the $$$ has to be pushed out by the consumers, just so we can experience something new. I am buying an 8800GTX so I can see the good graphics, have a future-proof PC and run dual monitors, I might even go for an Ultra. So, it's just a good investment if you like good graphics, but right now DX10 is hopeless below an 8800GTS 320Mb.
