i have a maxtor diamondmax plus 9 160gb ata/133hdd
everything worked fine, i restarted it and got a discreaderror
the winxp cd gives me the option to format the harddrive but i have lots of files i worked on in it that i need, so i tried using it in another computer, but there windows says its unformatted, 0 bytes on it.

How can all files have disaperd at a normal restart? Is there any way i can recover these files?

xp should give you an option to format or attempt to repair a windows installation if you insert the system disk and boot that, so I would give that a try
