Disk defragment - Not responding

everytime i try and disk defrag it stops responding. its on one of my external 400gb freecoms and ive never come across anything like this before.

has anyone had a similar expericence? its just using the one with XP but i just dont understand it :(

need any more info?

strange, i have never attempted to defrag anything above 150GB, i think it will be very slow and too much time, have you tried other alternatives ?
 
i dont see why its a problem as its never been before. what other alternatives could i use? some of the folders are about 40-50 gb a piece, could this be a problem?

can be, seems that you have way to much of data but i may be wrong.
when i said alternatives i meant another defragmenter such as Diskkeepers or check the link HERE and HERE
